afthereta smThe global situation due to the rise of the corona-virus has undoubtedly made us change significantly our way of life in recent weeks and reasonable measures have been taken to protect all of us. However, the work of the engineers has not been so reasonably limited, as a possible consequence of a general concern of the citizens who are afraid for their financial future in combination with the measures that have been imposed due to quarantine.

With the already delayed formation of the Councils and the rotating work in the urban planning due to the virus, the work of the engineers becomes significantly more difficult. Completion, if not the beginning of a settlement, becomes a rather time-consuming process where the time remaining until the expiration deadline on the 30th of June seems insufficient even if the order was given today. Given this, the Ministry of Environment and Energy has not made any official report on the extension of the deadlines, although a few days ago an extension to other urban issues was legislated with an urgent provision due to the pandemic. In particular, the extensions concern the validity of Building Permits, Approvals of Building Permits and Approvals of Small Scale Works, the submission of supporting documents for the declarations of Law 4014/2011, Law 4178/2013 and Law 4495/2017, etc.

Residential apartment renovation

The project concerns the renovation of an apartment in Neo Iraklio. The main goals of the renovation have been the aesthetic upgrading of the house and the unification of the spaces in such a way that the inertial spaces of the earlier layout are put to functional use. The kitchen was remodeled and integrated with the living room, while extending to the entrance hall. The natural light coming from the living room openings covers most areas, greatly enhancing the user experience.

The minimal aesthetics of the house are dominated by clean lines and colors. White and gray predominate not only in masonry but also in the kitchen. The materials, such as the cement in the bathroom and the look of wood flooring throughout the house create a cozy yet modern atmosphere. The hidden lighting in the living room, in the hallway and in the bedrooms gives a dynamic and multiplies the sources of light, thus enhancing the quality of artificial lighting.

Abstract. In this study, a review is carried out on the advanced use of image analysis and structural monitoring techniques to a series of physical model tests performed at a one degree of freedom force generator. Several scaled slope models with a variety of specific characteristics have been built and tested, aiming to the investigation of real-time measuring systems and in order to examine the behaviour of the geotechnical constructions when subjected to seismic loading. More specifically the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique and the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) analysis have been applied on the side face of scaled slope models in order to capture failure mechanisms during seismic loading. Furthermore, optical fibre sensors, recording strain, have been incorporated in the slope models and an accelerometer has been used for the recording of the seismic vibration. The monitoring scheme is presented, the test set up and model making procedure as well as indicative recordings via the utilized techniques. The wide range of applications and the combination of image analysis with other measuring techniques in order to provide comprehensive results about the behavior of the actual geotechnical models is presented. The physical model tests presented in the current study have also high educational interest.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the behaviour of scaled geotechnical models subjected to seismic loading. Several slope models were built and tested at the APS 400 Electro-Seis force generator, with a variety of specific characteristics and in particular (a) dry or semi-submerged, (b) with steep or minor slope inclination, (c) unreinforced or incorporating soil reinforcement, and (d) incorporating a pipe, aiming to simulate a scaled pipeline. The monitoring tools / methods utilized were (a) optical fibre sensors, aiming to strain recordings inside the slope models (b) the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique, in order to capture the failure mechanisms, and (c) accelerometer for the recording of the acceleration levels imposed.
